The Mind's Power Placebo Or Nocebo

The Mind's Power Placebo Or Nocebo

Placebos can and will work for us or against us. Placebo means to please. Then there is the opposite of placebo, called a nocebo. A nocebo works on us for example, if you read the side effects on a medicine and your doctor gives you a sugar pill or placebo, a certain percentage of people will actually develop the side effects. What we believe is that powerful.

Another example of a nocebo is in this story told by Dr. Joe Dispenza.

A man was living in the south and he was diagnosed with cancer. He goes through the proper protocol and they take care of his esophageal cancer. As they run the scan on him they find that it has spread significantly to his liver. So then as a result of that, he starts noticing that he is getting sicker and sicker. The doctors begin to work with him and they asked him, "What can we do to help you?"
The man said, "I just wanted to live until Christmas so I can spend Christmas with my family and after that I don't really care."

So one week after Christmas, he actually dies. But when they do the autopsy on his body they find he has no cancer at all and a little nodule on his liver.
In other words, it wasn't cancer that killed him. He died because he believed on some level that he was dying. Everyone around him believed that he was dying. He died by the most part due to thought alone.

Another example of a nocebo:

A graduate student is partaking in a new clinical trial with an anti-depressant. He gets in an argument with his girlfriend. After the emotions reach a great high he takes a whole bottle of the anti-depressant, storms out the door of the apartment, falls on the ground. They rush him to the hospital and the doctor from the clinical trial shows up and tells him he was actually taking the placebo not the drug. In a moment, all of his symptoms went away.

What we believe is powerful. It can work for us or against us.
