Like Walking Through The Brick Wall- Personal Story

Like Walking through A Brick Wall

My personal story by Deborah Moon Moen

 There came a time in my 40's that I came to learn how to stand on my own two feet. Suddenly I realized that no one was going to do it for me.
I knew I was responsible for everything that I was experiencing.
I came to realize the only person that I could change was myself.
No more could I depend on others to make me happy or secure.

I learned new ways of living and each new response to life was difficult because the old ways had become a habit.

Every time I changed an old pattern of belief or thought, it was like I was having to walk through a brick wall.
Waking up in the morning and getting through my day seemed as hopeless as walking through a brick wall.
But these were only my fearful perceptions.
In time, with practice, I was running free with so much of life before me.

Suddenly, I could not see that brick wall which I had painted in my mind. I saw only endless possibilities. I could see that for every response I made, life responded back to me, in magical ways.

When my actions and responses supported my well-being,
it was well-being that reflected back to me.
That was the evidence that gave me faith and shifted me into my inherit power to create my own experiences.

I was empowered beyond my wildest or conscious imaginings and I knew that I would never go back behind that brick wall again.

How Switchwords Helped Me Down The Mountain

How Switchwords Helped Me Down The Mountain

  I remembered to use switchwords to help me get down a steep rocky trail. The forest was damp with mist.  I was afraid of slipping. I stopped at the top of the trail. I placed my hand on my third eye and spoke these switchwords with the intention of calling forth help and to open my mind to have faith.

 TOGETHER         DIVINE           FAITH

After uttering the words, I instantly felt I was not alone. Together with the divine I had confidence to make my way down the mountain. Where before it looked to difficult to walk, I could now clearly see stable places where I could place my feet without slipping. I felt relaxed and confident, at one with the earth.
 It was a magical feeling throughout my whole being.

Switchwords have a mysterious feeling to them. They work better than affirmations because they pass by the anaytical mind and straight to the subconscious. You can say them silently or aloud, write them in a journal, write them on a bottle of water, and you can chant them. Think of them at the beginning of meditation. Here are some resource where you can begin to learn more about switchwords. The Internet is also full of information. Give it a try if you are inspired.

How I Learned To Meditate- Personal Story

How I Learned To Meditate

My Personal Experience Learning Meditation

When I was introduced to meditation, I had no idea how beneficial it would be for my mind, body and my life. There came a time in my late 30's when I needed to quiet my thoughts. My head was so busy it was hard to relax or sit still. I could only look at magazines with pictures because I couldn't even focus enough to read. My life had become unmanageable, I began meditation with a 12 Step group that practiced 5 minutes of silent meditation in their Sunday meeting.

Silence and stillness was very uncomfortable at first. My palms would perspire, my heart raced, and my mouth went dry. This does not happen to everyone, of course. What helped me was the group allowed us to focus on the St. Francis Prayer in our book.  Slowly my fears of being still, dissolved. In time my mind was became calmer and my body felt more relaxed. Meditation became something to look forward to.

As my mind became clearer, I was able to memorize the entire St. Francis Prayer " Lord make me a channel of thy peace...".  See prayer below. You may recognize this prayer with a a few differences.

St Francis Prayer - 12 Step Version

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace;

that where there is hatred, I may bring love;

that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;

that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;

that where there is error, I may bring truth;

that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;

that where there is despair, I may bring hope;

that where there are shadows, I may bring light;

that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.

Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;

to understand, than to be understood;

to love, than to be loved.

For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.

It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.

It is by dying that one awakens to eternal life.

Amen.

Every Sunday, a person was chosen to read the St. Frances Prayer out loud before our 5 minute meditation. One day I was chosen and recited the prayer by memory. I had come a ways from the person who couldn't read a magazine because her mind was too busy.

My next adventure was attending a special meditation group that met in a small building on the beach. This group had a silent meditation for 20 minutes! The longer meditation added a whole new dimension to my practice. I was able to reach a new level of deep relaxation. It was this practice that sparked my interest and inspired me to begin seeking a spiritual path.

I also attended a meditation class open to the public at the beautiful Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple in Hacienda Heights, CA. We were guided to breathe deeply and slowly and on the exhale we would count from 10 down to one equaling 10 breaths. We would inhale then exhale count 10, breathe in then exhale count 9...

We were instructed to stop if our minds wandered and begin all over again. I was nervous at first but after practicing a few minutes I began to relax and enjoy the experience. The session began with 3 distinct chimes and ended with them.  One night we were lead in a walking meditation in a serpentine formation. I had some deeply profound thoughts, creative visions and experiences during this time. It is different for everyone but the benefits of relaxation is well worth the experience.

Where my thinking was limited before, I now see endless possibilities. My relationship with myself grew and I began to know what I wanted to do in my life.. I grew to love many activities such as Tai Chi. I changed from being a dressmaker and became a Fitness Specialist as a Tai Chi Instructor. I utilized meditation in the beginning of my classes to relax the students minds and bodies.

Experience Is The Greatest Teacher

Sparrows on icy winter branches and
ravens  flying over head with frosted wings.

The temps have been dropping down from 20 to 6 degrees between 4 am and 7 am the past few days. I made my mind up before going to sleep that I would get up early to turn on the heat lamp in the coop.

I got up at 5 am got my warm clothes on and filled the water buckets, with warm water, in the kitchen sink. I stepped out into the new snow. It was so beautiful outside. Everything was enveloped in an icy fog. I made my way to the coop. I had my Yak Trax (crampons) on. They help me feel confident on the new snow. The snow from last week had turned to ice.

I Love My Yak Trax
You can get them on amazon.com
They are awesome !

I took off the blue tarp I had clamped across the front of the coop to stop the wind and snow from entering. I noticed one of the door latches were unhitched by the strong winds last night.

I opened the door with gloved hands because flesh can stick to freezing metal. The freshly filled water bucket was set inside the coop, the heat lamp was turned on, and the feed was replenished, along with some very desired dried meal worms, and sunflower seeds.

The bucket I had in there was frozen solid so I removed it and set it where the sun would help the ice to melt. My ducks and hens have a small insulated room where they roost. There was not so much as a quack or a peep while I was in there except for Fae, our white Plymouth Rock hen who came out and began eating. She looked great, unscathed by the bitter cold.

I shoveled the paths and cleared the corral along the fence so the llamas could eat their hay. The green hay looked so beautiful against the white snow. My hair was frozen and I had white frost where my breath had flowed in and out.

Overhead I saw the ravens flying from the west. I could see their under wings were frosted with ice.

Raven's wings and power line were frosted with ice.

I enjoyed my time out in the snow. As I opened the gate to walk back into the house, I looked back at the at the rising sun and low clouds which hung along the foot of the mountains.

I looked back as I opened the gate and felt so thankful.

I can not express enough what living on this little farm has taught me about caring for our animals and myself. It has made me strong and capable of doing things I did not know I could do.

Being a farmgirl is not easy at first but you learn by doing. All the books about farming and animal care can help but it is the experience that is the greatest teacher.

12 Steps ~ Awakening Part 3

"God, please help me or I will die" and He did.
God gave me the Gift of Faith
Art by Deborah Moen

12 Steps ~ Part 2

And out of my mouth came " Dear God please help me or I will die." I wanted to live but didn't know how. Everything I tried was useless. Approaching my problem with the same information tumbling around in my mind, would never be a solution. I needed help. I was in an abusive marriage.

It is very human to do the same things over and over again and expecting different results. It is like banging your head against a door over and over. My dad had a saying, " Does that hurt? Don't do that!" But these episodes oddly enough become familiar and more comfortable than change.

After all, think of it. Who would you be if your were that safe, peaceful happy person with no more worry? This could be a very scary thought. Who would I be then? Lions and and tigers and bears....oh my! And I repeated my mistakes over and over again even though it was progressively more painful. I just kept getting up and dusting myself off and trying again.

The time came when the dust no longer brushed off. Stress took it's toll on my body and mind. My head was being bashed against walls and car windows as I tried to escape. My safety was threatened on a daily basis, but now, it was worse.  I had lost control of my nervous system and when my husband approached me I would go into convulsions from fear. The light of life within me grew dim.

One day I thought I would again try to make everything clean and perfect. Mowed the lawn, cleaned the house and had something special for the husband to eat before he went out to party. I looked really nice too. I wore my favorite light green shirt and black stretch pants. I had everything finished and decided to take a walk. My walk extended farther than usual and I found myself inside the expanse of the high school field. My eyes lifted and gazed at the blue sky and white clouds. Then, all of a sudden, as if someone pushed me from behind, I felt compelled to uttered the words, "Dear God, please help me or I will die". It surprised me and I looked around to see if anyone was there. This was the pivotal moment when I asked for help.

That moment on I felt strength not ordinarily my own. 20 years I had been living in fear and in the pain of abusive attacks. That night I saw clearer than I ever did concerning my situation. God had given me the Gift of Faith.

As I stood in the kitchen that night, there was an amber light shining on me from the north facing window and again I was fortified with clarity. That night, during a usually scolding, I saw that I would never change my husband, only myself. it was such a relief and this truth gave me protection from being harmed.

That night I gathered my things and left that marriage forever. I stayed in a Best Western and I just seemed to know it was going to be all right. Every thing I needed for my comfort came along,  a home, friends, and even guidance from counselors.

My husband sought help from AA via a hospital and I was invited as a family member to attend. I agreed because in my mind I wanted to get my husband well. I had no idea I had was part of the problem.  I even attended AA meetings to learn more. Later I attended a few Al-Anon & Codependents Anonymous meetings and bought and read the book by Melody Beattie  Codependent No More
 I also bought her book The Language of Letting Go I carried that book with me and it taught all about how to handle my emotions. The corners of the pages turned dog eared after a while.

A miracle is a change in perception. ~ A Course In Miracles

Looking back I feel moved to draw pictures, write poetry and marvel at the miracle of how it all came about that morning and how I was ready to ask for help. Help arrived. Everything I needed showed up and it has been that way ever since.

That was 31 years ago. If you would like to read 12 Steps Part 1&2 here are the links:

I Saw The Walls of Jericho

I Saw The Walls of Jericho
Art By Deborah Moen

I had another one of those God moments that I would love to share.

I was taking my cat Harely McFarley for a stroll outdoors. The temps had warmed up into the 40's  and the sun was bright in a clear blue sky.

While Harley rolled onto his back in the crispy brown grass, I began listening to the Praying Medic's Supernatural Saturday-Seeing In The Spirit.  The Praying Medic, Dave Hayes was sharing his experience with seeing in the spirit as a movie, cartoon or a two dimensional image. It turns out I have been doing this for years but I did not connect it to seeing in the spirit. I just enjoyed it like a movie. As he was explaining how he began seeing in the spirit,  I closed my eyes. The movie began. I was flying like a drone over a road. Suddenly a massive rock wall appeared before me. I came to a gentle halt and explored the greatness of this ancient looking wall. I could see dust, the angular shape of the rocks and the cracks. The wall was a red-gold like the earth where I live in Utah

I told my friend and she asked me what the wall meant. I asked God what the wall meant. In a short while, I received the message like  a sudden out of the blue thought which seemed audible, "the walls of Jericho". I did not know what that meant so I looked it up. I have not read the bible but I am learning about the bible through The Praying Medic. Here is what I found while researching The Walls of Jericho.

 "God is more powerful than walls or things that may seem impossible. God simply told Joshua to have the people to march silently around Jericho for six days, and then, after seven circuits on the seventh day, to shout.

Though it seemed foolish, Joshua followed God’s instructions to the letter. When the people did finally shout, the massive walls collapsed instantly, and Israel won an easy victory. In fact, God had given the city of Jericho to them before they even began to march around its walls (Joshua 6:2, 16). It was when the people of God, by faith, followed the commands of God that the walls of Jericho fell down (Joshua 6:20).

  • This was such a gift for me and many people who are worried about how people are being treated like in Ottowa and other places around the world. The story of the Walls of Jericho has some powerful truths
  • God is more powerful than any obstacle we perceive with our physical eyes.
  •  Everything we want is already there. God has already given it to us.
  • Follow those messages those ideas that come out of the blue. If you don't know what they mean raise your face and ask God.
  • The answers come when you are aligned, That means spend time being quiet and still in tthe presence of God's peace so your thoughts do not drown out the message.
  • We may feel hog tied not able to help but there is a higher plan even if it looks foolish.
  • We receive guidance in God's time.
  •  Stay aligned with God's Glory have faith and guidance will come even if it seems not fast enough or not enough.

Wow! What a great message! It is jam-packed full of goodies. Glad I listened today to the replay. Dave Hayes is a great teacher. I am very uplifted by this experience.

Balancing A Body By Hand-Cranial Sacral Balancing

Balancing A Body By Hand
Cranial Sacral Balancing

We all have an instinctive reaction when our loved ones need comforting. Our loving hand goes right onto the back.

In our body are strange flows and fluids that reflect calm, fear, pain and other dis-ease in our body and mind. We can feel these rhythms through the 70,000 sensors in our hands. The only thing is that many of us do not know they are there. There are qualities you may feel when your hands lie along the spine. Movements like choppy, smooth, sluggish, excited, aggressive and shy.

Cranial Sacral Balancing gives us a system that has hand positions with very relaxed light touch.  There are 70,000 sensors in the hands. Place your hand along the spine and eventually you will feel the flow and rhythm of cranial and sacral fluids.

I took a Cranial Sacral Balancing course where we were able to practice on each other. We laid our hands on specific areas of the body. One student was laying hands on my knees. She jumped back as if shocked by electric current and I immediately began to shiver with cold. The instructor came over to see what had happened. I told her my body felt cold like when I was recovering from Gallbladder surgery. She said I was releasing anesthesia from my tissue. Every cell in our body holds memory of our experiences. This is a great therapy for releasing cell memory and trauma within the body. I found the practice of Cranial Sacral Balancing to be very relaxing.

Practical Use

One night my grandson awoke from a nightmare. He came into my room shaking with fear. After he shared the dream with me we returned to his bed. I helped him relax. He turned over to the wall and I placed my hands lightly, over his spine. I placed one hand on the top of the spine and the other one on the lower spine near the tail bone. I felt a splashing sensation with high sustained peaks going up then down. It reminded me of a dolphin jumping out of the ocean. The wave went up and splashed under one hand and then moved down the spine, splashing into the other hand. It did not take long for the rhythm to slow down. It smoothed out like a soft wave on the shore gently flowing from one end of the spine to the other. My Grandson fell peacefully asleep. You can do this also for someone who needs balancing or calming.

The techniques I have learned, the sensations and communication coming from the body have opened a whole new understanding of the body. After taking this class, I am aware of more sensations and I have a calm relaxed feeling while I practice Reiki or any healing modality. I now know the benefits of taking time on each area.

How I Learned About Law of Attraction

Orange Volkswagen Beetle Theory
Image by Michal Zacharzewsky
www.freeimages.com

 I used to be laughed at for my imaginative stories and positive attitude. When I saw the evidence of synchronicity I began to connect all the dots and could see my Power !

When I was 6 years old I remember having this momentary desire to learn all I could about the universe. I wanted to know how it worked. I felt that would be the ultimate to know as much as I could about this. Quite a unique desire for such a young girl but that desire manifested and I continue to realize more and more about the universe.

I knew this reflective response from the universe was in place even before I learned of The Secret and Law of Attraction. I just discovered it on my own. Just happened to have a nice couple who befriended me after my divorce and they had an orange VW Volkswagen Beetle.
 I began seeing orange VW Beetles everywhere !
I called this phenomena the Orange Volkswagen Theory.

That was in the early 90's.  I knew about and practiced creative visualization through Shakti Gawain. Then when The Secret came out I bought the dvd, the book and audio of the film The Secret.

I played the audio of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne while I drove, I had a special viewing for my Tai Chi and Reiki students and their families. I wanted to shout it to the world, " Hey look everybody ! You can create a good life !"

 "Hey look everybody, you can create your own life!"
Art by Deborah Moen

I practice every day being conscious and choosing fun things to do. Sometimes I may find myself talking or complaining about things I do not like but I remember to take my focus onto a whole different a more pleasurable activity that interests me.

When you begin it is helpful to
  • Notice how many times a day you worry or project the worse case scenario
  • Practice looking on the bright side.
  • Pay attention to your attitude
  • Learn to let go and let God
  • Enjoy being in the present moment

You create your life from your dominate thoughts, beliefs, and focus. With practice your beliefs, thoughts and focus will work together in harmony. You will see a difference.

Be Calm In The Storm

Be Calm In The Storm painting by Deborah Moen

Be Calm In The Storms Of Life

Row Gently, Have faith, and you will gently reach the shore.

Deborah's Little Gems

Can you remember a time when you had a challenging experience?  Maybe everything connected to that experience was difficult and nothing seemed to go well. You may have felt angry, frustrated, put upon or cursed by some bad karma. But you have a choice on how to handle the situation. In this post I will share an experience that was quite frustrating. I made a decision to approached it with a good attitude. I had heard some time ago that a good attitude can really help make things a lot easier. My experience just happens to be a weather storm but any challenging time can be referred to as a storm.

Here is my story of how I got through this

frustrating experience:

One day I felt dread at the idea of going out into a fierce storm to feed my llamas.

I know by experience that a feeling of dread can dominate the whole situation and follow you for the rest of the day or longer.

I dressed for the occasion and put on my snow pants and my coat and warm farm girl work gloves. I stepped outdoors and I found it is not so bad as I first thought.

It is helpful to notice what is going right. It lightens up the situation.

I made my way towards the llama corral. The winds were howling, it was cold, and the snow pelted against my rain jacket.  I could feel myself beginning to trudge, so I become aware of my posture, my facial expression and how I move through the task or situation. These features have a remarkable effect on our attitudes and outcomes.

No I did not do this but a few years ago I used to be afraid of the snow. I made up my mind to have fun in the snow and I began dancing in it. I made good friends with the snow that day.

I approached the stack of hay to feed the llamas. I began to unravel the tarps that tangled in the winds and undid the tie downs on the hay pallet. The wind was blowing hard and the snow was wet against my face. I fed the llamas and was ready to tie down the tarps over the hay with the bungie cords. I couldn't see inside the hay stack to attach the tie downs so I knelt down in the wet snow. I still could not see for my hood was flapping over my face and my long hair was whipping over my eyes.

I groped for my coat zipper with my wet glove and pulled down on the zipper tab. I was instantly freed and I could feel the wet blast of storm winds on my face and head.

After my hood was blown off I could see what I was doing and the freedom I felt was exhilarating. That initial feeling of dread was far behind me, I laughed out loud while attaching the tie downs on the wildly flapping hay tarp and just happened to look up to see a lovely pale blue winter sky appear out of the dark clouds. It was a break in the storm. What a great feeling I got. I was actually beaming and felt thankful.

These adjustments to our thinking, our expressions and posture really make a difference. We can unknowingly scowl and trudge through our experiences. Be aware. It is a choice.

Be calm in the storm and when you are aware of dread, make a choice to live life with an attitude that can help you get through these challenges that life brings. Look for all there is to appreciate in each moment. It may start out a bit rocky but it does smooth out if we let it. The more we practice this awareness and make choices that support our well-being the easier it gets.

I believe or perceive that blue sky appearing on that dark, wet, and windy day was a wink from God.
