Goodbye Medication, Hello Meditation

Note: Correction to related links at bottom of post are now  corrected.

Meditation is really very simple. You can meditation anywhere.

  1. Right now as you sit in front of your screen, notice your breathing.
  2. As you breathe, notice any sensations or tingling, warm areas or cool areas in your body.
  3.  If you get a thought that is ok just return to your breathing.
1-2-3 ... Now, isn't that easy?

How do you feel? Better? Notice the slightest difference in improvement of your mood or pain level and try the meditation again. It really is a wonderful way to reduce pain or uplift your mood or relax you.

Here is a guided meditation by Deepak Chopra. Try it and notice how you feel. Now that you know how easy meditation is, practice everyday and everywhere. Pain or emotion relief will become automatic.

Goodbye Medication, Hello Meditation

by Lara Rosenbaum

If you’re hurting, sit down. Meditation can reduce pain by 40 percent, a new study finds. In fact, meditation produced a greater reduction in pain than even morphine or other pain-relieving drugs, which typically lower pain ratings by about 25 percent, says lead study author, Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D., of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Animals and Healing E=MC2

Animals have an energy system too.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, Indian philosophy and even western practitioners all agree on a human energy system. These systems also are within animals and in the earth. This energy system effects balance, well-being and health. Below is a link to a very good article on these energy systems http://www.livingenergyworks.com/articles/AnatomyoftheSubtleEnergySystem.pdf. The article does not mention animals but this may be helpful to you in understanding how this energy system works together in the body.

Windy Girl, right and Decker Dog, left

I learned the following technique from Lisa McKenzie, Animal Communicator and Energy Healer. You may use this on any creature great or small, wild, or domesticated, frog, dog, cat, bird, lizard, penguin, tiger, whales, or any other creature you would like to assist in healing or comforting. I will use our Austrailian Shepherd, Windy Girl, as an example. Windy is terrified of fireworks and thunder. A flash of lightening will send her right up the nightstand in an attempt to escape the following clap of thunder. She drools and pants in a panicked state. We adopted Windy from a rescue at the age of 2 and whatever conditioned her to fear those loud booms, we do not know. However, in using this technique, she experienced a relaxation response which was accumulative meaning that even after the treatment  the benefits of it continued to help her. I have done this technique 3 times on Windy. Twice during consecutive thunderstorms and once during an episode of soreness after a long walk. She loves it! When my fingers trace her meridians (energy pathways) and I come to her little hips she wiggles and snorts like it tickles. As a result Windy is able to function quite well during a thunder storm, firecrackers, and gun shots on our hikes.  Animals will respond differently depending on their personality and condition. This you can also perform long distance by imagining a particular animal or from across the room or standing over the animals. The fingers do not touch the animal. There is a space of about 6" to a foot or more above the meridians.  Move slowly and concentrate on the fingertips. You may feel a sensation of tingling, warm or hot or cold or nothing at gall. Everyone will get a different response. It is all good. Treat an amputated leg or docked tail as it was naturally. The physical part that is gone is still energetically there.  Let's begin.

Hand Position
The position for your hands during the treatment is like a church steeple. The hands are clasped together and the index fingers make a steeple like in the picture above.  Your index finger tips will draw lines above the animal beginning  at the nose tip  to points on the forehead, between the shoulder blades, between the hips bones, and to the tip of the natural tail or end of the spine or body. The hands separate at the shoulder blades and hip bones and continue down the legs stopping at the center points of the paws front and back sending deep roots into the earth for grounding. Grounding is also done at the tail. Here is a step by step guide to follow:

1. Imagine the animal or have the animal with you. Make your steeple with your fingers. Use it like a magnetic wand. Begin at the nose tip and run your fingers slowly along the center of the animals eys to the crown (top of head). Hold that position for 1 full breath. Release hands.

2. Again begin at the nose tip and draw your magnetic wand up the nose between the eyes through the center of the crown and along the spine to between the shoulder blades  (see illustration 2). Hold for 1 full breath. Separate your hands keeping your index fingers out and draw your magnetic wands down the front legs and hold at the center top of the front paws, pads, hoofs, feet or fins.

3.While you hold that position, imagine roots growing down, from the pads on the front paws, feet or fins, deep into the earth. ( see illustration 3) Takes 1 full breath and on the exhale and send the roots down into the earth for grounding. Then release hands.
Note: Have you ever seen the roots of an old oak tree? It's roots run very deep.

4. Place your hands together into position again and beginning at tip of nose draw your magnetic fingertips up between the eyes, through the top of the head, down between the shoulder blades, down along the spine to between the hip bones or lower spine and hold there. Take 1 full breath. Remember to relax your shoulders and body.

5. Separate fingers and draw a magnetic line down the back legs to to center of the back paws, pads, hoofs, feet or fins. (see illustration 5) Takes 1 full breath and on the exhale and send the roots down into the earth for grounding. Just use your imagination. Then release hands.

6. Begin again at the nose tip with your hands in the steeple position and draw a magnetic line up between the eyes, crown, shoulder blades, along the spine, between the hips or lower spine, and to the tip of the natural tail or end of the spine. Draw a line down to the earth from that place and send your roots. Remember to take your time breath and use an image.

You may feel tingling warmth or magnetic pull as you do this treatment. Though it is not necessary to feel this rather it is very interesting. Which reminds me to tell you we have another very effective and seemingly out of this world technique you can try on your precious ones in the animals kingdom.

Energy Yawn

Energy Yawn for mental alertness. This really ROCKS !

Perform the energy yawn for a simple exercise to loosen the muscles of your face and mouth, improving relaxation and blood flow to the area surrounding the brain. While sitting comfortably, use both of your hands to lightly massage the muscles surrounding the cheekbones and the jaw. Use mild to moderate pressure, focusing on the task at hand and ignoring everything else. Continue this massage for two to three minutes. Afterward, you should feel relaxed and prepared to learn. This feels so freeing and wonderful.

The yawn is easy to repress in public but this little exercise feels so relaxing! Everyone will react differently but after I did the exercise I yawned and yawned releasing all that tension that I was unaware of in my face and jaw muscles. Try it and let me know what you think in the comments below. Have a great day and thank you for stopping by Deborahs Little Gems.

The Starfish

And then there was Light

One day, walking along the shore, a teacher and a student came upon a beach littered with thousands of storm-tossed starfish, writhing and dying in the hot sun. Without a word, the teacher scooped up a starfish and gently deposited it in the waves. Overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of the suffering creatures, the student just stood and watched as the teacher picked up another starfish, and yet another, releasing them in the healing safety of the cool green water. At last the student spoke, "Teacher, what is the use in even trying? There are too many. How can you make any difference?" The teacher lifted another starfish from the burning sand and carried it into the surf to set it free, then turned to the student. "I made a difference to that one." ~Ancient Eastern Proverb

My Huna teacher told us this story and it left quite an impression on me. I later found Wayne Dyer also tells this story. The world may seem so overwhelmingly caught up in violence, financial ruin and hunger for many things outside of ourselves. But we can make a difference in the way we respond to our experiences. Be the one who can see it, feel it and affirm the differences you prefer.  There is much to contemplate in this story. Just one act of kindness or love sends out a signal like rings in a vast lake. You do make a difference. You have a choice in every minute of every day to express your preferences by being them. Just one person can change the world one smile at a time, one kind thought at a time, one starfish at a time and so on and so forth. This is very nice to know through practice.

If you want to be happy for a lifetime, plant a garden”

If your soul needs soothing or your spirit rejuvenating, get yourself out into nature. Treat yourself as you would a garden, pulling out metaphorical weeds, planting beautiful flowers, and building and sculpting until you have created a thing of beauty.

Your life will begin to blossom as you chip away at outdated beliefs, weed out negative habits and replace them with seeds of opportunity.

How to Calm and Relax Your Anxiety, Panic or Stress

This video shows an easy method to calm and comfort ourselves during stress. It is a natural response to stress to place our hands here.  Dropping a plate, winning a contest, making a big mistake are a few that trigger stress and this natural response. Now that we know it calms us we can use this method to bring quick relief. It feels very good. Relax your shoulders, breath slowly and enjoy. This is also a a position used in Reiki for self care and treating others. So you can help your family and friends release tension also by placing your hands lightly on these two areas of the head while standing to the side of them. Isn't it wonderful to know we have a natural way to help ourselves release stress and also comfort ourselves and others?

History of Law of Attraction 1879-Present Day

The New York Times, 1876

The New York Times published an article on April 6, 1879 using the phrase "Law of Attraction".

The New Thought Movement, 1904–1910

Thomas Troward, who was a strong influence in the New Thought Movement, claimed that thought precedes physical form and that "the action of Mind plants that nucleus which, if allowed to grow undisturbed, will eventually attract to itself all the conditions necessary for its manifestation in outward visible form.

William Walker Atkinson (1862–1932)

In 1906 used the phrase in his New Thought Movement book Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World, stating that "like attracts like." The following year, Elizabeth Towne, the editor of The Nautilus Magazine, a Journal of New Thought, published Bruce MacLelland's book Prosperity Through Thought Force, in which he summarized the principle, stating: "You are what you think, not what you think you are."

Science Of Getting Rich 1903

Written circa 1903 by Wallace Delois Wattles
With Introduction by Rebecca Fine

The Science of Getting Rich published in 1910 is a
Timeless wisdom and a practical, step-by-step
prosperity program from a long forgotten classic.

Charles Haanel - 1912

The Master Key System, which was originally published in 1912, sold over 200,000 copies before it was banned by the church in 1933 and was then lost to the public for some seventy years.

The Master Key System lays down the foundation of the principles of creative manifestation through the Law of Attraction, as Haanel understood them. You will learn how to develop and use the creative instrument of your mind—creating true abundance in your life and opening up to the limitless possibilities of the truly creative life.

Theosophy, (1915–1919)

The phrase "Law of Attraction" appeared in the writings of the Theosophical authors William Quan Judge in 1915, and Annie Besant in 1919.

The Law of Success in 16 Lessons, 1928

Before the release of Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill released The Law of Success in 16 Lessons (1928) which directly references the Law of Attraction, by name, repeatedly.

"Think and Grow Rich", 1937

Richard Weiss, 1969

Richard Weiss explains in his book The American Myth of Success (First Edition 1969) that during the New Thought movement, the "principle of "non-resistance" was a popular concept taught in conjunction with the Law of Attraction.

21st Century

In 2006, a film entitled The Secret (2006) based on the "Law of Attraction" was released and then developed into a book of the same title in 2007. The movie and book gained widespread attention in the media from Saturday Night Live to The Oprah Winfrey Show in the United States. The same year Esther and Jerry Hicks (who provided much of the original source material for The Secret) released the bestseller, "The Law of Attraction".

Author and business man Kevin Trudeau produced an audio compact disk program called "Your Wish Is Your Command" in 2001, which deals with the same subject of thoughts manifesting reality.

In August 2008, Esther and Jerry Hicks's book Money and the Law of Attraction: Learning to Attract Health, Wealth & Happiness appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list.

Considered leaders in the field by enthusiasts, Esther and Gerry Hicks provide workshops all over the world on the Law of Attraction.

My favorite book by Jerry and Esther Hicks is Ask and it is Given available above.

Our Brain And Law Of Attraction

Our Brain and The Law of Attraction

Law of Attraction is mysterious unseen force. Our brain is involved in the process by determining what revealed to us by what we focus on most of the time. There is a tiny group of cells the size of your little finger tip located in your brain called the Reticular Activation System or RAS. Your RAS is a station for incoming sensory impulses. It is an automatic mechanism inside your brain that brings relevant information to your attention according to your beliefs and perceptions.

There are millions of information bits at any one time in our present experience. However, our brains can only take in 125 bit's of information at one time. Most of what is going on around us is not even seen or noticed. I have examples of this further along the article. The RAS not only selects certain stimuli, it removes 99+% from our very perception.

The human brain sees and hears only what we are conditioned to see or hear. Our brains delete whatever information is not in line with our set of beliefs, biases and prejudices. We focus on our perceptions and set the RAS to make decisions.

The mind sees only what it is trained to see. If the mind is not open to it, it will pass by unnoticed. Deborah Moen

Sometimes it may be your own doing through your perceptions and belief systems, sometimes it is brilliant marketing or propaganda that has snuck in there.

It is interesting to note that the RAS is responsible for revealing what you ask for and it also reveals to you what you fear or hate or do not want. It reveals to you what you focus on.

For example: When you are thinking I do not want to eat candy, the RAS hears only that you are focusing on "candy" and your attention to candy will be sorted as an important conscious bit of information to notice "candy" everywhere. Candy will be in your face 24/7.

Another way to focus on your desire to eat less candy would be to say or think, I "allow" a healthy lifestyle or I desire nutritious foods. Your RAS will sort that information as important and all opportunities in your experience that represent healthy eating will be easily noticed.

This phenomena works with everything. If you fear spiders and focus on that, chances are your RAS will seek them out and you are going to spot them everywhere. When you have your mind on a new car you will begin to see the exact make and model in places you never saw them before. You will see that particular car everywhere. If you fight against cancer, war, gangs, the government you will notice and experience more of the "fight" than the solution.  If you think the world is out to get you then you will notice all the incidents that prove this true. If you are worried about parking, your RAS will affirm there is no parking by blocking available empty spots from your awareness. When we are confident a parking space will show up our RAS will seek it out. You do not have to believe in this for it to work. This mechanism is working whether you are aware of it or believe in it or not.

The FEDEX White Arrow

A FEDEX truck. We see them everywhere.
Have you noticed the white arrow in the logo?

Look closely between the green letters E and X
Most people have not noticed this white arrow.

The mind sees only what it is trained to see. When the mind is not open to it, "it" will pass by unnoticed. Deborah Moen

Abraham Lincoln said, "If you look for the bad in people you will surely find it".

BUT...If you look for the good in people you will surely find it. The choice is yours. This is where these tiny little cells in our brain called the Reticular Activation System can with awareness and retraining, help us achieve success and attain our goals and help us recognize all the goodies that come along on, what I used to call, the conveyor belt of life.

When we are aware of this function of the brain and set out to understand it and retrain our beliefs and responses to life, we begin to notice that the right book, just the right phrase we catch on TV, a phone call, or a billboard will magically show up.

The Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria

The Niña, The Pinta and The Santa Maria came across the ocean in the breaking waves. It is said the natives were blind to the ships because they had no-thing in their experience to reference them to. This is a feature of the RAS.

The RAS and Law of Attraction
The film The  Secret began a surge of awareness of universal law called the Law of Attraction (LOA). But successful people throughout history have been aware of a phenomenon that like attracts like. There are those people who interpreted The Secret

Those who have studied Law of Attraction know that it is working whether you know it or not. The law of gravity is working whether you are aware it or not.  One of the main keys to an abundant life is living in a state of allowing, releasing resistance, finding relief and better feeling thoughts, becoming appreciative with our life now and experiencing happiness and joy.  The Non-Physical part of us is always in this blissful state. Getting the mind used to this way of thinking takes practice. But once you begin to notice the subtle and not so subtle differences that occur as a result of this practice, you will know come to know a happiness and peace  aligned with your spirit.  This alignment is downloaded into our RAS brain function and begins to assist you in seeking those things you desire automatically.

I will leave you with this story
Author unknown:

A wise old man sat by the side of the road. A traveler approached and inquired about the village that lay ahead.

"What kind of people live there?"

The old man asked, "What kind of people lived in the town you just left?"

The traveler responded, "Oh, they were awful people, thieves and villains...liars and cheats."

The old man said "Well, that's exactly the kind of people in the village up ahead."

Presently another traveler approached and asked, "What sort of people live in the town over that hill?"

The old man asked him what kind of folks he had left behind.

The traveler replied "Oh they were wonderful, warm people - the kindest folks ever." And the old man said.....

"Ah, well that's just the kind of people you'll find up ahead."

Core Beliefs-Still Cutting Off the End Of the Ham?

 Generational Core Beliefs

A Story- Are You Still Cutting Off The End of The Ham?
A newly married young woman, while preparing an Easter dinner for her husband, cut off the end of the ham before putting it in the pan to roast, just like her Mother had done before her. One afternoon while her Mother was visiting, her daughter asked her why she had always cut the end off the ham. The Mother replied that it was what her Mother had always done. Mother and daughter decided to pay a visit to Grandma to find the answer to their question.

So the following Sunday, while visiting Grandma, they asked her why she had always cut the end off the ham before putting it in the roasting pan. She replied, "I only had a small pan and it was usually too small for the size of the ham!" This story beautifully illustrates what can happen when we blindly follow tradition without asking the appropriate questions.

To follow without questioning the traditional ways of our parents and grandparents, is like unnecessarily cutting off the end of the ham.

There are other beliefs we blindly follow such as:

  • I can't trust anyone but family.
  •  I am selfish to ask for a better situation.
  •  I am poor and there is never enough mone.y
  •  I get sick every flu season.
  •  I am stuck in this job, relationship or situation

You may want to dump your box of beliefs out onto the floor, sort them out and throw away those beliefs that are keeping you from your joy, happiness and success.

The Four Candles Ceremony

Ceremony

Ceremony and Ritual create the space and opportunity to pause in our busy lives, to reconnect to the sacredness of life and power of being alive. Ceremony brings families, friends and communities together and allows a space where we can pause to open our hearts and reflect. Ceremony can help us rediscover ourselves and heal disconnectedness amongst families. Ceremonies can be detailed with regalia and interconnected rituals or it can be as simple as singing to the setting sun.

I have taken The Four Candles Story (author unknown) and presented it as ceremony for my family and my students. It is truly a lovely ceremony that your participants will love to share with their family and friends. Print out copies of The Four Candle Story/Ceremony to share with them. You will be creating a beautiful space for healing and communion with our spiritual selves.

Here is what you will need:
  1. 4 long tapered candles and holders
  2. Lighter or matches
  3. Music ( I play Ava Maria afterwards for reflecting) I have included the music below. Music tends to open the heart and creates a spiritual space for reflection.
  4. Festive table runner or decorative cloth (optional) and copy of The Four Candle Story/Ceremony

Ceremony for the Four Candles Story :

A few weeks or days before the ceremony make an announcement through that you are offering The Four Candles Story/Ceremony and invite the participants to come. Note: this could also be an intimate simple ceremony at the dinner table with your family. Do add the music for inspiration. No need to go all out but if you want to here are the details.

On the day of the ceremony:
  1. Prepare by setting the table with the table runner or cloth, 4 candles and lighter, before your participants enter the room
  2. Set up the music so it is easy to play after the Four Candle Story/Ceremony.
  3. When your participants are seated welcome them the ceremony, turn down the lights and begin lighting all 4 candles
  4. say the following
The Four Candles burned slowly.

Their ambiance was so soft you could hear them speak...

The first candle said, "I Am Peace, but these days, nobody wants to keep me lit."

Then Peace's flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

5. Extinguish The Candle of Peace

6. Say the following:

The second candle said, "I Am Faith, but these days, I am no longer indispensable."

Then Faith's flame slowly diminished and went out completely.

7. Extinguish the Second Candle of Faith

8. Say the following:

Sadly the third candle spoke, "I Am Love and I haven't the strength to stay lit any longer."

"People put me aside and don't understand my importance.

They even forget to love those who are nearest to them."

And waiting no longer, Love went out completely.

9. Extinguish the Third Candle of Love
10. Say the following:

 Suddenly...
A child entered the room and saw the three candles no longer burning.

The child began to cry,
"Why are you not burning? You are supposed to stay lit until the end."

Then the Fourth Candle spoke gently to the little boy,

"Don't be afraid, for I Am Hope, and while I still burn,

we can re-light the other candles."

With shining eyes, the child took the Candle of Hope

and lit the other three candles.

11. Light the 3 candles with the fourth candle of hope

12. Say the following:

Never let the Flame of Hope go out.

With Hope in your life, no matter how bad things may be,

Peace, Faith and Love may shine brightly once again.

13. Play the music while the candles are a glow ( not too loud but audible for all to hear)

14. After the music has stopped playing allow a few moment of silence and allow time for discussion or fellowship. This is a nice time for refreshments or dinner. How about a toast to PEACE, FAITH, LOVE and HOPE.

Ceremony offers an outlet for expressing that which our busy lives seem to have no room for. We can create space and include  ceremony into our lives to nurture our spirit, open our hearts, celebrate life and to ease the stresses we experience along our life's path. - Deborah Moen
